Whether you’re looking for an indoor venue so you don’t have to stress about the weather or an outdoor spot to minimize messes, you’ll find them here because we’ve got some of the best places for a 1-year-old’s birthday party. Now that’s out of the way, you can go back to stressing about party themes and gifts.

Park

Local parks are great places for a 1-year-old’s birthday party and a parent-favorite first birthday party location. Spacious and usually free, parks are a blank slate. Set up bubbles, games, balloons, kiddie pools, or anything else your child adores. Bring plenty of picnic blankets and check to see if your local park allows you to reserve picnic tables in advance.

Playground

Playgrounds with tot lots are heaven for 1-year-olds. Invite all your birthday child’s friends to their favorite stomping grounds and watch the fun unfold. Some playgrounds have gazebos or pavilions you can reserve for your guests and decorate for the party. There may be high demand, so book early!

Fire Station

One of the best-kept secrets of children’s birthday parties is that many fire stations will allow you to host your child’s birthday party there. And often for free. It’s a unique location for a first birthday party and will set the bar high for birthday parties to come.

Pool

If you are lucky enough to live near a pool with features for little ones, look into holding your party there. Most 1-year-olds love splashing in zero-entry or shallow pools. Just be sure to tell guests to bring life vests for non-swimmers. Many public pools have on-site rooms that can be booked for parties.

Community Center

For a relatively inexpensive indoor party, see if your local community center has rooms for rent. As a bonus, some community centers come pre-stocked with toys, so planning activities will be easier.

Kid-Friendly Restaurant

Parties are a great excuse to celebrate with food. A kid-friendly restaurant is a good choice for a first birthday party location since it can cater to both children and adults. If your 1-year-old has discovered a love for pizza or french fries, select a location that serves them up. Ask in advance if you can bring balloons, decorations, and cake, and definitely make a reservation. Some restaurants can provide a private room or rope off a section for your exclusive use.

Botanical Garden

If you want to throw an Insta-worthy soirée, head to your local botanical garden. If you are lucky enough to live near one, try to reserve a pavilion. Or, stake out a spot early in the day and set up a picnic for your guests with the blooms in the background.

Zoo

By the time your baby turns one, chances are they already already love the zoo. Hold a birthday party there if this is one of your go-to spots. It’s not only a great way to support your local zoo, but it’s also a fantastic, kid-friendly spot for a party. For a truly unique present, see if you can name one of the animals after your newly minted 1-year-old.

Children’s Museum

Another place your child may already love is your local children’s museum. This is the perfect place to celebrate your baby transforming into a curious toddler. Your birthday theme can tie into your child’s favorite exhibit. An annual membership makes a great tie-in for a gift.

Someone Else’s House

Your home may not be one of the best places for a 1-year-old’s birthday party, but someone else’s house might be perfect! Maybe Grandma has a big yard or a great room perfect for entertaining. If so, ask if you can host your little one’s party there. Even a neighbor or close friend might be willing to host a small gathering. If your baby has a buddy with a birthday around the same time, ask if you can host a joint party at their home with a fair division of labor. This is an especially good option if the guest list overlaps with daycare or the neighborhood.

Indoor Play Space

When outdoor parties are not an option because of weather or lack of available space, look for an indoor play area. Make sure they have age-appropriate gear for crawlers and new walkers. Invite a few chums, or if you have money to burn, rent out the entire building for an epic celebration. Many indoor play spots have a private room, so ask about that when booking.

Your Favorite Spot

Let’s be honest: Your 1-year-old won’t remember their first birthday party. That means there is no shame in celebrating making it through your first year as parents instead. Throw a bash at your favorite restaurant that’s all about your new family and invite your grown-up friends. Your little one will have plenty of birthdays that are all about them so no need to feel guilty about stealing the spotlight just this once.

13 Tips for Throwing a Successful First Birthday Party https://tinybeans.com/first-birthday-party-tips/ https://tinybeans.com/first-birthday-party-tips/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2024 08:30:23 +0000 http://tinybeans.com/?p=756344 Even though your baby won’t remember their first birthday, it’s a major (and incredibly cute) milestone for parents—one that your kid will love to look back on when they’re older (be sure to save all the best pics in the Tinybeans app). You’ll probably choose the most adorable party outfit, soon to be covered in freshly baked (or bought!) smash cake. But with schedules to take into account and a lot of little personalities to cater to, how do you plan a party to remember that doesn’t end in disaster? Whether hosting a small gathering with family or a big blowout, these are the first birthday party ideas and tips that’ll ensure everyone has a great time—especially the birthday babe.

1. Respect the nap.

Happy, stress-free parties require a well-rested baby, so time the birthday bash around your baby’s naptime. While this may mean a different start time than Grandma expected, everybody (especially your child!) will have a better time if you work around the sleep schedule.

2. Create a quiet area.

Since parties with babies can mean tears and gleeful shrieks, setting up a secondary party area in another room or outside for guests to go to if they need a break from the festivities is a brilliant first birthday party idea. Set out non-electronic toys for babies who may feel overstimulated, and place chairs and snacks there for adults who want a spot for quiet conversation.

3. Designate photographers.

To ensure you capture the big moments and sweet snuggles with important folks, ask a few attendees to take charge of specific photo moments. That way you can focus on your child and guestsand end up in some of the photos, too! Take all the sweetest snapshots and make them into a Tinybeans photo book to save your memories of the special day.

4. Choose a simple theme.

If planning a Pinterest-worthy party sounds too stressful, stick to a simple theme. For a summer party, you could use hearts and pops of pink and orange to make the party look cohesive, whereas some sparkle and snowflakes with blues and silver would look lovely in the winter. Or opt for an easy theme like trains, animals, or under the sea. Fun punny ideas include Baby’s “Berry First Birthday” (with berry hues and flavors) or “Beary First Birthday” (bring on the teddy bears), “Mr. or Miss One-derful,” or “Some Bunny Is Turning One.”

5. Or… skip the theme.

No, you don’t need a themed first birthday party. Promise. Instead, spend your money on fun first birthday activities your baby and guests will enjoy. Our favorite is the ball pit. Just buy an inexpensive kiddie pool and a lot of colorful plastic balls. Kids will love to play around in it, and you can set it up at home or in your backyard for your kiddo to enjoy for years to come.

6. Take photos before guests arrive.

One of our favorite ideas when planning parties for one-year-olds olds is to snap pictures before baby gets sleepy or cake-covered and when you and your family are more relaxed and focused. To ensure you get great photos, make or order a small smash cake before the big day and do a low-key photo shoot without any guests around. Baby will be all smiles, and no one flipping through the scrapbook will ever know that the picture was taken on a different day.

7. Weather permitting, opt for an outdoor venue.

A park or playground can be the perfect party spot; all you bring is the cake, balloons, favors, snacks, and a table (or use a picnic table that’s already there!). The mess will be minimal in the great outdoors, and younger guests will have lots of space to run around.

First birthday party tip: Arrive early to stake out a spot in the shade, and tell guests what color balloons or decorations you have so they know where to find you. If the weather isn’t cooperating and you need to move the party to your home, make extra room indoors by moving furniture out of the party room so little legs can crawl or walk around.

8. Put older kids in charge of games.

Delegate, delegate, delegate. Older kids, like cousins or friends’ children, usually love to be given responsibility at parties, and they’re really good at getting the younger ones’ attention. Put them in charge of party games, music-making, singing songs, and more. Chat with the older kids (and their parents) in advance to ask what they’re comfortable doing and create a plan.

a picture of a baby with a smash cupcake, a good first birthday party idea

9. Use a cupcake for smashing.

Smash cakes are all the rage with the one-year-old crowd and their photo-taking families, and while we say smash away, a tiny confection or cupcake works just as well with much less mess. You may even be able to salvage your child’s outfit for future events if you go for a less messy, smaller cake.

10. Personalize the party.

Highlight a few of your baby’s favorite things over the past year (first word! favorite food! favorite stuffed animal!) and make a poster you display at the party. This first birthday party idea from Kara’s Party Ideas lets guests learn about your baby and is worth snapping a photo of for your child to revisit in a few years. Better yet, make it a yearly tradition.

11. Create a time capsule.

Asking your guests to write the guest of honor a short letter to be read years from now tops our list of sweet first birthday party ideas. To ward off writer’s block, offer suggestions for what to write, such as helpful advice, a memory of the party or first year, or wishes for the future. Store the letters in a marked container that reads “Do not open until you turn 21” (or whatever age you like). For guests who can’t make it, ask them to email your submissions—print them out, and file them away for a future date.

12. Make your party treats self-serve.

Set up everything from drinks to dessert in advance so you can tell guests to help themselves, leaving you to focus on your child and having fun. For younger guests, prep cut-up fruit, applesauce pouches, and cups of Cheerios or snack crackers. For adults, a charcuterie board, crudites, and antipasto are always popular nibbles.

13. Keep it short and sweet.

Little people get overstimulated quickly and can’t handle too much of a good thing. Limit your party to two hours or less so everyone can leave on a positive note.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

If you feel like your Aries kiddo is in charge of the whole house, you can thank their natural leadership skills. A fire sign, and the first sign of the zodiac, this little ram has a bold, spicy personality that makes them brave, confident, and generally self-assured. Those are traits many of us, even as adults, struggle with, so having a natural sense of self-confidence is incredible. While they really aren’t arrogant, their security in themselves makes them driven and ambitious. They’re competitive and determined, energetic and a little impulsive.

aries text and illustration

Your Aries babe is dynamic and majorly ready for adventure at any time. Honesty will be a major value they develop, and along with their strong leadership skills comes the ability to bring others together and build community. It’s likely they’ll want the whole family to participate in game nights (of their choosing, of course), and although their fire sign nature can lead to some hot-headedness (we’re sure you’ve noticed) and cutting words, these dynamic and energetic kiddos are reliable, magnetic, and never dull.

Taurus April 20 – May 20

taurus decorative image

Even at 12 months old, your Taurus kiddo is highly intuitive. There’s a good chance you’ve noticed them exploring the world using all 5 of their senses, even more than the average toddler. These bull-y babes are notorious for being exceptionally sensitive to the people and environment around them and are likely to surprise you with their ability to ‘read’ situations and people from a young age. Your Taurus will also be right about their sense of things more often than not, so when they stubbornly (they’re the bull, of course) insist they get a ‘vibe’ about something, it’ll definitely be worth taking seriously.

taurus text and illustration

Tapping into their intuitive abilities gives them a strong sense of favoritism. They’ll use each one of their senses to quickly pick out their favorite foods, movies, places, and people that suit them best. Two of their faves? Sunshine and fresh air. This Earth sign is definitely solar-powered. They’re also deeply grounded and solid, so reconnecting with nature and getting their hands dirty is always a good idea when they’re having a particularly bull-headed moment.

Gemini May 21 – June 20

gemini illustrated text and constellation

Gemini babies are born with exceptional communication skills, so if you have a serious babbler on your hands, it’s not necessarily just for the sake of hearing their own voice. This sign loves interaction and storytelling (which also gives them a little bit of a tendency to embellish their tales, so gently calling them out on those little white lies from a young age is a good idea). Geminis are known for their unpredictable personalities, thanks to the dueling twins as their ruler. That’s not a bad thing, though. They’re so fun and, despite sometimes running hot and cold, they’re actually really adaptable and curious.

gemini text and constellation

Geminis are a social bunch. They have an excellent sense of humor, and a lot of that can be attributed to their exceptional intellect. They’re in the company of JFK, Walt Whitman, and Natalie Portman, and their intelligence can approach or reach genius level. Technology, gadgets, coding tools and toys are going to top their lists of interests. Your Gemini is likely an insatiably curious kiddo who can multitask like a master. Fostering their hunger for knowledge and natural engagement will be a parenting win for these little ones.

Cancer June 21-July 22

cancer zodiac illustration

Ah, your emotional little crab. They’re ruled by the moon and, just like their lunar influence, go through phases frequently. And while it’s true that Cancers are ultra-sensitive, they really are pretty darn easygoing and easy to please. Even when they are having a crabby moment, they’re very unlikely to lash out physically or act out. These crabby kiddos are empathetic, compassionate, and deeply nurturing. They notice everything and forget absolutely nothing.

small cancer zodiac symbol and text

When a Cancer child gets into one of their sullen moods, and they will, it’s a great time to break out an arts and crafts project so they can express their emotions. The good news? They do get over their cranky hermit moods pretty quickly. More often than not, you’ll get a ton of cuddle time thanks to their nurturing and family-oriented nature. Cancers are true sweethearts that love to be at home, be close, and thrive on gentle parenting approaches (they aren’t usually apt to take advantage of people), and will always glow under approval from those they love.

Leo July 23 – August 22

Loyal and affectionate, your Leo baby truly lives up to their lion ruler. It’s next to impossible to find a more dedicated leader, and no one will mind when they’re the first to stand up and take charge. Why? Because they don’t just enjoy leading; they excel at it. Making decisions is their forte, and that’s a trait you can capitalize on as a parent (“Would you rather where the blue shirt or the pink dress?”, etc.). They’re energetic, too, so anything that lets them move their body is a solid choice. This fire sign is a jungle gym boss. Try to stick with a regular bedtime, mom. Sleeping is not one of their talents. FOMO is strong with them.

You’ve probably noticed that ‘Drama’ is your lion cub’s middle name. Everything is big, bigger, biggest with a Leo baby. From the biggest smile in the room to the most epic tantrum in the least convenient moment, the lion roars with their whole chest. Sass and wit come easily to them, and they seek the spotlight at all times. Give them space to express themselves, to perform made-up plays and songs, and respect the importance they place on honesty above all, and you’ll be on the receiving end of their purr more often than their bite.

Virgo August 23 – September 22

Meticulous. There’s no other word that applies more to this earth sign. They’re neat, exacting, and detail-oriented, and you can rely on them to be responsible from an early age. They adore helping, so letting them assist in household chores is a great way to bond with your little one. Highly organized and oh-so-smart, Virgo babes also tend to be extremely analytical. Those traits serve them well often, but it’s likely you’ll notice their innate intelligence often leads them to be exceptionally hard on themselves. It’s a good idea to remember that these shy-leaning kiddos aren’t necessarily seeking attention so much as reassurance.

Virgos are represented by a maiden carrying a shaft of grain, associated with their love of serving and their deep-rooted connection to the earth. Along with their desire to serve others, they’ll strive for perfection, no matter what. This can manifest in struggling with a sense of self-worth, insecurity, and feelings of inferiority. These struggles feel very real for them, so don’t hesitate to build them up without worrying their ego will become too inflated. Allow them to help out, praise and appreciate their hard work, and encourage them to get out of their heads from time to time and use their hearts to express themselves through art projects, writing, and getting a little messy (occasionally).

Libra September 23 – October 22

The most idealistic people you know are likely Libras. As air signs, they float into the realm of borderline naive hopes that everyone will get along at all times and any kind of conflict can be triggering for these balance-craving babies. They’re natural negotiators and peacemakers. They love when everyone around them feels relaxed and at ease and they’ll go above and beyond to make sure of it. This ‘by any means necessary’ attitude towards achieving harmony can lead to people-pleasing and some difficulty confidently stating their opinions (though they certainly have them), especially in a group. Libras are social and are often everyone’s best friend, though they’ll limit their personal close contacts to just a few lucky people.

Your Libra adores beauty, sometimes to a fault. This can come off as shallow and materialistic, but ultimately, feeling surrounded by beauty is their love language. It contributes to their sense of harmony. They also have a strong belief in love and romance, and associate love with beauty of all kinds. They do struggle with making decisions, and are very much go-with-the-flow. They’re more peacemakers than leaders. Your Libra baby is ruled by Venus, so they love affection and can’t hear ‘I love you’ too much. Warm, quick-witted, and charming, their sweet dispositions are usually upset by overwhelm or a sense of injustice for themselves or others. Encourage their love of fairy tales as well as teaching them how to ground themselves when they get a little ‘floaty’ and you’ll keep them balanced and happy.

Scorpio October 23 – November 21

We all know that Scorpios are intense, and we wouldn’t change that for the world. They never do things with only half their heads or hearts, they’re deep, brilliant, and natural researchers. Scorpio babies feel things so deeply, and encouraging them from a young age to express their emotions in a healthy way instead of keeping it all bottled up will serve them well. They do tend to be slightly distrusting in general, so if they take a while to warm up to someone, it’s not lack of manners. Your little scorpion will test you, but that’s their way to making sure that your love is truly unconditional. They’re the ride-or-die sign that values loyalty and remains intensely aware of the people and things around them.

Scorpios get a bad rap of being secretive, but it’s not sneakiness so much as their introverted nature. They process everything internally and love a good mystery. It’s important to let your baby Scorpio know that it’s okay to talk their emotions out with someone they do trust while at the same time setting boundaries so they still feel in control. Your little one’s drive and determination can mask a sense of fear and insecurity that can lead to anxiety, so reassurances and giving them a sense of safety will be really helpful. Scorpios are magical, intuitive, and love with their whole hearts.

Sagittarius November 22 – December 21

Sunshine-in-person-form, Sagittarius is a fire sign that’s more warmth than burn. They’re the wild child of the zodiac. They adore nature, the outdoors, adventure, and exploration. Your archer is an animal-lover, so they’ll ask for a pet (if you don’t already have one. If you do, expect them to want to add to the gang!). These babes are open-minded, progressive, and extremely free-spirited. Conformity and routine aren’t strong suits of theirs, and they really struggle with rules, so a great way to keep them from getting too far off track is to explain the logic behind rules so they understand that you don’t intend to stifle them; only to protect them.

These little ones are imaginative and creative and they would really prefer to avoid sitting in one place too long. Sports, walks, and physical play are favorites of this sign. Your Sagittarius will want to run errands with you and will make it an adventure instead of a chore. Take them to the park, to the grocery store, the dry cleaner, and expect them to add some sparkle to the whole afternoon. They’re fascinated with pebbles, sticks, and flowers, so they’re likely to come home with full pockets and random things in the bottom of their backpack. Little Sags can be impulsive and a little reckless, so guiding them without smothering them will help them thrive.

Capricorn December 22 – January 19

Your Capricorn baby is a true old soul. They come into the world wise beyond their years, and, similar to Virgos, they’ll strive for perfection. Under their goat ruler, they’ll reach the mountaintop or die trying, in so many words. They have an intensely strong work ethic and will need to be reminded to play, too. Capricorns are highly-productive and ambitious, preferring logic to emotion. Because of this, they give great advice without getting too wrapped up in being overly emotional.

It’s a good idea to keep in mind that these little goats are their own worst critics, so if they do make a mistake, even if discipline is needed, try to also remind them that they’re still lovable, smart, and worthy. They don’t shy away from responsibility, though it does take them some time to warm up to others on a personal level. Encouraging compassion and empathy will be great for them, especially teaching them compassion toward themselves. They won’t typically indulge in dress-up or playing pretend; play needs to have a point for Capricorns. Reward systems really resonate for this sign, too, so chore charts and allowance will be awesome drivers.

Aquarius January 20 – February 18

Unique and quirky, your Aquarius is so independent and fun, there’s never a dull moment. Individuality is their driving force, and encouraging their self-expression is ideal for raising happy water-bearers. They’re open-minded and a bit rebellious, but as long as you step back and embrace their little quirks and unique likes, their rebellious streak will be tempered. They march to the beat of their own drum, and their creativity knows no bounds.

Interpersonal relationships are paramount for air signs in general, but as the last air sign of the zodiac, Aquarius takes this trait to a whole new level. They’re deeply rooted in teamwork and the ‘greater good’, so they’ll often be involved in projects that connect with community and are the first to jump into anything revolutionary that feeds their humanitarian souls. As humanitarian as their souls are, they don’t do small talk or people-pleasing. They need something much deeper. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet that governs innovation, technology, and surprising events, and that perfectly represents this visionary babe.

Pisces February 19 – March 20

The ultimate sensitive sign, those born under Pisces are considered to be darn near magical. They’re said to walk between reality and whatever lies beyond, so if you think your babe is growing into a child who just knows things, you’re probably right. This is a sign that has a high propensity for psychic abilities. As children, they don’t realize that not everyone has this sort of intuitive knowing, but once they do, they may try to bury that part of themselves, or simply retreat into themselves to avoid sensory overload. This can lead to others thinking these fish are a little snobby, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Pisces’ precious personalities are always looking for people and animals who might need help or who they consider vulnerable. They give generously and struggle with boundaries, so it’s your job to guide them into healthy relationship practices. True born artists, Pisces babies will express themselves through works of art that are dreamy and compelling. They love living in their sparkly, whimsical land of imagination, so reminding them when it’s time to focus on being grounded and present will help them out a lot. Pisces toddlers need gentleness and care above all things and a recognition of their extreme sensitivity to avoid hurt feelings. Take care of them with a lot of love and a delicate touch and your guppy is sure to shine.

We’ve rounded up eight party favor ideas for kids that promise to make their special day that much more special—and parents will appreciate that none of them include candy. Adorable Aprons

Lillian Hope Designs

For a group of budding chefs—or perhaps for a cookie decorating gathering—consider passing out aprons so that you don’t send home tiny bakers encrusted in frosting and sprinkles. While these aprons from Lillian Hope Designs are personalized with iron-on transfer paper, you could easily swap out guests’ names for a mixture of holiday symbols, snowflakes, snowmen ... you get the idea!

Wonderfully Easy Wands

Aesthetic Nest

For the Frozen fanatics who just can’t let it go, make their whimsical dreams come true by outfitting each and every guest with one of these Elsa wands from Aesthetic Nest. Using just a dowel rod, a few ribbons, and some snowflake ornaments, they’ll soon be turning everything into snow and ice.

Party Pampering

Evermine

For older children who enjoy a little pampering, dole out these mini manicure kits from Evermine. The frosted bags are on-target for the season, and you can change up the packaging and nail polish colors for a more wintery look. You could even include tiny bottles of hand cream to protect little fingers in the dry cold!

Make Your Own Memory

The Green Divas

Compact enough to slip into a backpack or purse, this pint-sized memory game from The Green Divas is perfect for airplane rides, doctor’s office waiting rooms, or restaurants. The options for images on each wooden coin are only limited by your local craft store’s stamp selection! Your special birthday kid will have a ton of fun making these games for his friends, too.

Let It Snow

Minieco

Give your guests the double-whammy magic of a snow globe AND a LEGO miniature! These hand-held jars from Minieco will entrance little eyes for hours—both with their softly-falling glittery “snow” and the LEGO figurine inside. Let your child choose different figurines for her guests to choose from for themselves.

Make Your Own Favor

One Cup at a Time

Give each of your party-goers a holiday ornament that they’ll treasure for years to come! Our slideshow has tons of ideas—from felt gingerbread people to reindeer jar lids and peanut snowmen. Let the kids make the ornaments themselves at your child’s party, or set aside a few hours for you and yours to craft the day away and pass these mementos out for all to enjoy.

If a party isn’t your thing, try these fun alternatives to mark your little one’s first year of life. From a day at the zoo to fun with balloons, here’s how to celebrate baby’s first birthday without a party but still with friends, relatives, or just your immediate family.

Playing with balloons is one option for how to celebrate first birthday without a party
iStock

Balloons!
On the big day, gather the best elements of a birthday party and have a family day celebrating with them. We're talking things like balloons, streamers, music, cake and lots of hugs and kisses. You'll make the day special for both of you and have lots of photo ops without all the stress and expense of a party.

Fishy Fun
Dive into a day of birthday fun with a trip to your local aquarium. Your baby will be mesmerized by all of the watery sights and sea creatures. (And mom and dad will be mesmerized watching baby!) Watching fish float by is fun, but we bet the dolphins, seals, sea otters and other marine mammals will be the biggest hits of the day. Don’t forget to visit the tide pool animals, too. Bonus: Children under two are usually free at most aquariums!

Festivals
Scope out local festivals, and then head out for a day of fun. (Red Tricycle's city guides always keep you in the know. And check local websites or Facebook groups for event calendars.) Your child will love taking in all of the sights and sounds that accompany a street festival. Music, people watching, new foods—the event promises to be as fun for mom and dad as it is for baby.

Suzanna Palmer

Go Wild
Your little one’s first birthday is the perfect time to head to the zoo. Kids love seeing animals they've read about in storybooks and making animal noises with you as you view the exhibits. All the new sights, sounds and smells will likely keep baby’s senses engaged, but bring a stroller or carrier for naps. Best spots for photo ops: The petting zoo, tram, carousel or kiddie train.

Art Project
Channel your little one's propensity for making messes into a work of art with a painting session. Gather some basic painting supplies from your local art supply store, like a small canvas, washable paints and a smock. Then, secure baby in a high chair and let the fun begin. Note the date and occasion on the back of the work of art; then find a place of honor to display baby’s first-birthday masterpiece.

Seasonal Celebration
Baby born during the fall? Head to an apple orchard where you can bounce along on a hayride and sip apple cider. If you have a winter baby, take a walking tour of your area’s best holiday lights. For babies born during spring or summer, visit an outdoor concert or botanical garden to celebrate the season along with baby's birthday.

Suzanna Palmer

Let Them Eat Cake!
Just because you aren’t planning a party doesn’t mean you should skip a cake. Having a smash cake sesh might just be the highlight of your little one’s day, and yours. Your baby is more likely to feel at ease—and dive face-first into the goodies—without dozens of eyes and cameras peering at them, like they'd have at a party. So bake up your favorite cake or pick one up at your local bakery and then dig in, baby!

Park It
Scope out the local parks for baby-appropriate offerings, such as bucket swings and paved walkways for strollers. Bonus points if the park has a water feature, such as a fountain or pond for fish, turtle or duck-watching. Pack a blanket and a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day together as a family.

Low-Key Playdate
Get your mommy & me crew together for a casual playdate at one of your usual haunts. Bring a snack (cupcakes, cookies or fruit) as a nod to the birthday babe, and let the kids play while you and the other moms celebrate that you got through your first year as a mom.

However you choose to toast your tot, make sure to capture all the special moments—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Blueberry Velvet Cake

I Heart Chocolate Milk

Blueberry muffins meet birthday cake! If your child is a blueberry fan, make this beautiful Blueberry Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting, courtesy of Tanya at I Heart Chocolate Milk. Use a sugar substitute to make a sugar-free version of this recipe. And if you don't want to use artificial coloring, add a little blueberry puree to your cake batter or choose an all-natural food coloring.

Banana Cake with Greek Yogurt Frosting

Hello Bee

Familiar flavors create a cake your child will love to nibble while smashing. This banana cake from Sarah at Hello Bee combines bananas with maple syrup and tops them with a sugar-free Greek yogurt frosting sweetened with honey. Color your yogurt frosting with a fruit puree of your choice.

Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free Vanilla Pound Cake

Natural Sweet Recipes

Pound cake is the perfect choice for your smash cake (get it?). This Vanilla Pound Cake from Naturally Sweet Recipes is free of gluten and dairy but full of vanilla, protein and healthy fats. The ombre frosting is colored pink with strawberries. This recipe makes enough for a smash cake plus a larger cake for grown-ups.

Note: Babies under age one shouldn’t consume honey. So if you choose a recipe that uses honey, don’t serve it to younger guests.

It will get messy, but that makes for the best photos! Make sure to capture all the first birthday moments—and share them with your family and friends near and far—with the Tinybeans app. The secure platform puts parents in total control of who sees and interacts with photos and videos of their kids.

Everything is Awesome

Mer Mag

LEGO bricks never go out of style, but we predict LEGO parties will be especially big this spring building off of The LEGO Movie 2. We love this theme because the party activities plan themselves. Dump out a pile of bricks and let your master builder have at it. Pass out Minifigs as the perfect party favor. Then, follow Mer Mag's inspired example and set out a plate of rectangular cookies, bright icing, and Spree candies so kids can make their own party treats. For more LEGO party ideas, check out Mer Mag's post.

Fab Flamingo

Sleepunder + Donuts = Magic

Fancy Schmancy Notes

If you're kiddo's begging for a sleepover, but you're worried about whether or not it's the right time to open that door, throw a sleepunder instead. It's all the fun of a sleepover—think PJs, movies, and giggle-fests—and then everyone goes home to sleep in their own cozy beds. Add in a giant pink donut cake like this one, and we think you've got a super spring party.

Art's a Blast

Jim Pennucci via flickr

Art parties are awesome, but having one indoors is absolutely not. Springtime means it’s finally warm enough to go outside and make a mess. Set up easels and art supplies in your yard where you can let the kids get creative without having to worry about paint splatter. For more messy ideas click here.

Dinomite!

Pretty My Party

Take your party back—way back to the Jurassic era. Get inspired by fearsome dino-riffic ideas like using all those leftover plastic Easter eggs for a dinosaur egg hunt. We also love the free printable dinosaur bingo made by Pretty My Party that you can use with delicious dino egg-like jelly beans that double as bingo markers. Roar!

Please Touch the Animals

Blair Photography

The only thing cuter than all the young spring chicks and lambs making an appearance is your own little birthday bunny’s face as she’s surrounded by animals to pet and love. Find a local petting zoo to host your bash and serve up animal crackers alongside fresh veggies to feed the live bunnies and guinea pigs.

A Party They'll Totally Dig

Alison Benbow via flickr

Throw on a few gardening hats and let your guests get their hands dirty with a planting party in your backyard. Have the kids decorate pots and fill them with dirt and seeds and serve up garden-fresh fruits and veggies. Give sets of tot-sized gardening tools as take-home favors.
