Whether you’ve got a family full of daredevils looking for the biggest new thrill (Hello, Rise of Icarus!) or little swimmers who want to bob in a lazy river filled with floating Legos, there’s probably a waterpark out there that fits your agenda. Here’s our list of the Best Waterparks across the U.S.:

Photo: OKANA Resort & Waterpark

OKANA Resort and Indoor Waterpark (Oklahoma City, OK)

Owned and operated by Oklahoma’s native Chickasaw Nation, OKANA (a blend of the Chickasaw words “oka’,” meaning “water,” and “inkana’,” meaning “friend”) is a new $400 million resort featuring a 401-suite hotel, a 100,000-square-foot indoor waterpark, multiple restaurants, a massive arcade, and a 4.5-acre adventure lagoon with a large sandy beach that’ll make you feel like you’re lounging lakeside. The outdoor lagoon (open during the summer) includes a floating obstacle course and two twisty tube slides that drop into a deep-water pool. Meanwhile, the year-round indoor waterpark boasts 15 slides, including a thrilling water coaster that zips riders up and down steep hills, two racing slides, and several raft rides. There’s also a wave pool, lazy river, baby and toddler area, and an interactive water play structure packed with smaller water slides, splash zones, and tipping buckets.

Bonus: For parents looking to relax, the outdoor area offers a swim-up bar and an adults-only pool lounge, while the indoor park features a warming pool beside a bar that overlooks the slides.

Universal Orlando Volcano Bay (Orlando, FL)

With a towering 200-foot volcano visible from miles away, Volcano Bay features 18 immersive attractions ranging from heart-thumping adventure slides to relaxing rambling rivers. Highlights include the Krakatau Aqua Coaster, which launches riders up, down and around the park’s iconic volcano; and the Puihi of the Maku Puihi Round Raft Rides, which drop riders down a “lava tube” into a massive funnel.

Bonus: The TapuTapu wearable, included with admission, lets you reserve a virtual place in line so you can come back when it’s your turn to ride. It also activates various effects, such as water cannons and water streams that can be directed at unsuspecting passersby. You can also use it to open lockers, snap photos (at designated photo spots), and make purchases throughout the park.

*Note: With so many waterparks in Orlando (namely, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon & Blizzard Beach, Island H20, and  SeaWorld’s Aquatica), it can be hard to choose! We chose Volcano Bay because of its immersive staging and convenient TapuTapu bands (bonus that they don’t cost extra!).

Highlights include the Build-A-Raft River, where guests can design and float their LEGO rafts, and the Riptide Racers, a thrilling mat-racing slide. Younger kids can enjoy the DUPLO Splash Safari kids’ pool area as well as the Joker Soaker, a multi-level water playground with plenty of ways to get wet.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark & Resort (New Braunfels, Tx)

They say things are bigger in Texas, and this sprawling water park is no exception. Housing what it calls the largest collection of water rides in the world (there were 51 rides in total as of 2024), this sprawling water park was named the “Best Water Park in the World” 22 times by Amusement Today magazine. Among the smorgasbord of offerings is an uphill water coaster that zips riders up a flume of water as fast as they slide down it (the concept was invented by Schlitterbahn, according to USA Today) as well as a 3,600-foot whitewater raft ride (one of the longest in the world) that takes riders over gushing water, light rapids, and small waterfalls.

10 Family-Friendly Activities We Love in Reno Tahoe https://tinybeans.com/10-family-friendly-activities-we-love-in-reno-tahoe/ Thu, 20 Feb 2025 13:45:55 +0000 https://tinybeans.com/?p=2218621 Parents, it’s 2025, and we’re swapping the usual scramble to plan every. single. detail of every trip for a destination that makes family fun effortless—because who’s got time for stress when there’s adventure to be had?

If you’ve never considered the Reno Tahoe region for a family getaway, it’s time to take a closer look. This northern Nevada gem is a cultural haven that offers more than just outdoor experiences; it’s packed with hands-on museums, a thriving food scene, action-packed entertainment centers, epic sports, and shopping your kids will actually enjoy.

Even better? It promises 300 days of sunshine and everything is close by, so you can pack in a full day of fun without worrying or hearing “I’m bored” 50 times.

Read on for ten activities that’ll transform your Reno Tahoe vacation into a culture crawl the whole family will love, with plenty to explore, learn, and experience together.

1. Slip in some playful learning

Looking for a place where your kids can climb, create, and tinker without realizing how much they’re learning? The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum is a hands-on wonderland where science, art, engineering, and history come to life. With over a dozen interactive exhibits, toddlers to tweens can scale a multi-story, cloud-inspired jungle gym, build towering LEGO creations, and even step into the shoes of an inventor in a Smithsonian-designed lab. It’s part indoor playground and part museum, making the Discovery the perfect spot to mix up your vacation routine with fun, creativity, and a little sneaky learning.

2. Catch a baseball (game)

For a local experience that’s not only affordable but chock full of fun, head to the Greater Nevada Field. Home to the Reno Aces, the area’s Minor League Baseball team, this family-friendly ballpark offers more than just a great game. From April through September, catch a home run from the grass berm, let little ones roam the on-site playground, indulge in classic ballpark bites with a twist (like a nacho dog!), and watch a free fireworks show (on Friday nights). It’s the perfect way to enjoy America’s favorite pastime, Reno style.

3. Skip your itinerary & spend a whole day at this hotel

Whether you’re looking for some downtime or want to keep your kids entertained for as long as possible, the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno has it all. With a bowling alley, arcade, movie theater, escape room, and even a virtual reality arena, your family will be begging to stay in the hotel. There are also plenty of on-site restaurants serving up burgers, pizza, and tacos, along with an all-day buffet, so you’re covered for every meal of the day.

4. Feast on street bites at a food truck festival

Food trucks have made quite a name for themselves in the Reno Tahoe area, so much so that summer boasts several popular festivals dedicated just to these mobile eateries. Feed The Camel is a hometown favorite happening every hump day, starting in June. Food trucks from all over the region convene at the McKinley Arts Center to dish out a diverse mix of street food, desserts, and personal entrees, like elote fries, noodle bowls, double-stacked burgers, fried shrimp skewers, and ice cream tacos. Parents looking for some adult-only fare will find cocktails and craft beers too.

5. Get some serious air

If there’s one activity guaranteed to tire out your Energizer bunnies while keeping their spirits high, it’s a trampoline park. And Spark’s go-to, DEFY at Legend Towers, takes it to the next level. That means a ninja obstacle course, a dodgeball arena, a zipline, and even a stunt fall where thrill-seekers can test their skills. Little ones will love the wall-to-wall trampolines, while older kids (and parents!) can challenge themselves on the aerial silks or battle beams.

6. Rise & dine at a local gem

Early risers with big appetites? Squeeze In is calling your name. This Nevada breakfast chain serves up next-level brunch fare, like giant teddy bear-shaped pancakes for little foodies, super stuffed omelets (with bottomless toast!), jumbo breakfast burritos, and zesty benedicts. With plenty of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, there’s something for everyone at the table. Did we mention scribbling on the walls is encouraged here? Add a message to their signature wall covered with heartfelt notes from past visitors.

7. Snag unbelievable outlet bargains

If shopping is your “me time,” we’ve got three words that’ll get the whole family on board: Indoor Ferris wheel. The Outlets at Legends is home to SCHEELS, the world’s largest all-sports store, that boasts a 65-foot Ferris wheel, two 16,000-gallon aquariums, a candy factory, in-store cafe (hello, snack break), and an arcade. While the kiddos are occupied, you can sneak away to score big at popular outlet stores like Adidas, Carter’s, OshKosh B’Gosh, Gap, Nike, and more. A stress-free shopping spree? Sign us up.

8. Have a drink while the kids play

Unwind with a flight of Schussboom Brewing Co.’s craft brews—because let’s be honest, you’ve earned it. This family-friendly brewery is designed with parents in mind, offering an indoor kids’ corner where busy bees can play and watch TV, plus a picky eater-approved menu. Its laid-back vibe makes it the perfect spot to hit pause on sightseeing, while giving you a moment to enjoy a cold one and fuel up with tasty pub bites, like the fan-favorite Schuss Poutine—crispy fries or tots loaded with beer braised short ribs, savory shiitake mushrooms, gooey cheese curds, and crunchy fried onion strings.

9. Beat out bad weather with brainy fun

Yucky days, meet your match with the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Located within a historical building in Carson City (a short 30-minute drive from Reno), this kid’s museum is packed with plenty for young children to do. Tots will love the mini doctor’s office and Capitol building that’s perfect for pretend play, while big kids can get lost in a foosball and air hockey match. The museum also features educational exhibits on Nevada’s rich history and weekly art, STEM, and reading workshops for more hands-on fun.

10. Lose track of time at Reno’s epic entertainment center

Wrap up your culture crawl at South 40, an all-in-one entertainment venue for family fun. Kids can spend hours in the state-of-the-art arcade, packed with everything from Skee-Ball and claw games to Mario Kart and a virtual reality room. But the fun doesn’t stop there! South 40’s indoor backyard has mini bowling, axe throwing, ping pong, cornhole, a dedicated play area for kiddos, and even live music on the weekends. When hunger strikes, head to the grille for a bite, no matter the time of day. It’s the kind of place where everyone in the group will find something to love.

From bouncing off the walls (literally) to chowing down on street food and catching a baseball game under the stars, Reno Tahoe is big on culture and family fun. Start planning your trip now and get ready for a getaway that has no limits. For more family-friendly Reno Tahoe ideas, head to visitrenotahoe.com.

Everything You Need to Know About the New Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Ride at Disneyland https://tinybeans.com/new-tianas-bayou-adventure-ride-disneyland/ Thu, 14 Nov 2024 03:06:43 +0000 https://tinybeans.com/?p=2217096 Disney fans will be happy to know there’s a new ride at Disneyland. Kind of.

A year after Splash Mountain was closed due to complaints about racist stereotypes in its storyline, the water ride has spectacularly reopened as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. And… You will get wet. (In fact, riders say almost too wet. More on that below.)

Here’s everything you need to know about the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Ride at Disneyland.

Christian Thompson/Disneyland Resort

It replaced the controversial Splash Mountain

In 2023, Disney closed its Splash Mountain water rides at both its U.S. parks after widespread criticism for its theming, which former Disney CEO Bob Iger called “not appropriate in today’s world,” At the time, the 31-year-old ride was based on the 1946 movie, “Song of the South,” which contained racist stereotypes.

The original Splash Mountain toggled its log boats through winding waterways filled with woodland creatures following the title character of Br’er Rabbit, as he hid from his nemeses, Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear. The ride culminated in a waterfall drop into the briar patch, a reference to a story told in the “Song of the South” movie.

After a petition was started to remove the attraction in favor of a “Princess And The Frog”-themed ride, Disney agreed to reimagine the ride based on the 2009 animated film, which features Disney’s first black princess, Tiana.

Melissa Heckscher

It’s still a really great water ride

While some people were upset to see Splash Mountain go, the good news is that the ride itself is just as good as the original. After all, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has the same basic blueprint as the original ride, with riders enjoying two smaller drops before climbing up a steep hill in the dark for the final plunge. It also has updated ride technology, LED screen additions, and better animatronics.

As for the setting, Tiana’s Bayou is supposed to take place in an aging salt mine filled with cavernous hallways and watery tunnels. Inside, our beloved New Orleans princess—now in her dream job as a successful restauranteur—grows her own vegetables and keeps a kitchen to cook up new recipes; you’ll see this adorable kitchen while you’re waiting in line.

Melissa Heckscher

The story is a little hard to follow, but kids won’t care

The story of the ride (which is not obvious) is this: It’s about a year after the events of “The Princess and the Frog.” Tiana is a successful restauranteur throwing a big ole’ Mardi Gras party with her friends. Mama Odie, the lovable voodoo priestess from the film, must “shrink” all log riders down to the size of frogs so they can explore the bayou in search of special spices for the feast.

Cue the jazz and zydeco music.

With both indoor and outdoor sets, the ride explores this fantastical bayou, where frogs dance and twirl, music fills the air, and animatronic characters beckon you forward. Whether you follow the story or not, fans of the film will love seeing the familiar faces, including several appearances by Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, Mama Odie, the alligator, Louis, and a menagerie of frogs, raccoons, and other bayou critters.

Some people think it gets you too wet (but c’mon, really?)

OK, it’s a “water ride.” So the presumption is that water is involved (right??). Still, many people on social media are complaining about the wetness factor.

“Our shoes and bodies were soaked,” said this social media user on X (formerly Twitter). “We would only do this again if we had a complete change of clothes or could run back to a hotel room on property.”

“Got so wet on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure I had to buy new shoes,” complained this Reddit user.

To that, I will just say,  come on, people. It’s a water ride. Yes, you will get wet. But it’s not that bad. (And if you’re really worried, you can buy a poncho at one of the many Disney stores nearby ready to sell you one).

Hint: The first mini-drop of the ride—which happens about 3 minutes into the 9-minute ride — actually got me wetter than the last, so be sure to put away your devices and protect your stuff.

Melissa Heckscher

It’s a perfect first thrill ride for little kids (who are at least 40″)

While Disney calls the ride a “perfect first thrill ride for kids,” tiny tots who aren’t tall enough will have to wait a little longer to ride (if you want to take turns with your partner riding the ride while your little one waits, ask a cast member about the complimentary Rider Switch feature).

There are no scary characters or villains in the ride like there are with some of Disney’s other infamous dark rides (“Snow White’s Scary Adventures,” now the less-scary “Snow White’s Enchanted Wish” traumatized me as a kid).

And yes, the drop at the end is steep, but it’s a quick one. Apprehensive kids will be immediately rewarded (or distracted) with the ride’s colorful finale, which shows Tiana and her bayou friends celebrating Mardi Gras in grand French Quarter style. Bright Colors! Happy music! Even nervous kids will likely walk out smiling.

Melissa Heckscher

New ride = New swag!

What’s a new Disney attraction without a slew of new Disney stuff to go with it? Not surprisingly, the opening of the new ride comes with new merchandise. Not only will Tiana be represented at most of the souvenir stores across the park, but you can find a whole new store devoted to all things Princess and the Frog at the new “Louis’ Critter Club” store inside Bayou Country.

If you’ve got a kid who loves the movie, get ready to load up on Crescent City-inspired apparel, accessories, home décor and more all around New Orleans Square. My fave: This adorable light-up firefly, which can sit on your shoulder and “interact” with anyone else wearing their own firefly. (It can also be used as a lantern at home, and apparently, it’ll also light up when you use your remote control, as this Facebook post describes).

Christian Thompson/Disneyland Resort

How to find the ride

When you get into Disneyland, head down Main Street to Frontierland. Tiana’s Bayou is located next to the Haunted Mansion and across from the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, inside the newly renamed “Bayou Country” (which was called “Critter Country” when it was Splash Mountain territory).

And while you’d expect the ride—which features a 50-foot final drop—to tower above the park, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is somewhat camouflaged by all the greenery designed to give it that authentic bayou feel. If you didn’t catch a peek of a token log plummeting past, you might miss it. Look for the yellow and green farmhouse; that’s where you’ll find the entrance.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens to the public on November 15, 2024. To learn more, go to: Disneyland.disney.go.com.

Knott’s Berry Farm’s Reimagined Camp Snoopy Has a New Roller Coaster https://tinybeans.com/knotts-berry-farm-new-camp-snoopy/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 03:01:32 +0000 https://tinybeans.com/?p=2211725

Little adrenaline-seekers will be happy to know there’s a new-and-improved place for them at Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, Calif., now that the theme park has officially opened its newly reimagined “Camp Snoopy” with a new family roller coaster that’s a perfect first “big kid” ride.

Knott’s Berry Farm

While older kids may want to head to Knott’s Berry Farm’s more grown-up thrills like Ghostrider and Silver Bullet, younger kids will have plenty to keep them zipping, chugging, and swinging the day away. In all, the 6-acre Camp Snoopy has 12 rides for littles (almost all of them are suitable for toddlers), including tiny airplanes they can control, twirling trucks they can bounce, a whirling boat to dizzy them, and a tiny swing ride that lets them feel the wind on their faces. Other family-friendly rides scattered throughout park include the iconic Calico Railroad and the adorable (and sweet-scented!) Knott’s Bear-y Tales: Return to the Fair.

What’s New:

Knott’s Berry Farm

Central to the new Camp Snoopy is Snoopy’s Tenderpaw Twister, a new roller coaster that takes riders up a small hill, then delivers a pint-sized launch before looping around a few wide turns and coming back to the start and doing it all over again. Parents and kids can ride it together, making it a perfect first coaster experience for kids brave enough to handle the (very mild) speed quotient. Note: Guests must be 42″ tall to ride alone OR 36″ tall to go with a parent or older companion.

Joshua Sudock, Knott’s Berry Farm

Other reimagined rides include Camp Snoopy’s Off-Road Rally, which has been expanded with a new track and terrain. Mini drivers can hop into a Peanuts-themed four-wheel jeep and tackle twisty roads where kids should be on the lookout for funny road signs, obstacles, and course checkpoints.

The newly themed Beagle Express takes riders on a scenic train ride, crossing over a covered bridge and chugging around the land to see the beloved Peanuts gang in action. Sally’s Swing Along is a subtle tweak of the existing kids’ rocker, a pendulum that sweeps gaggles of kids 10 feet up toward the sky like they’re riding a giant playground swing.

When you want to take a break, let the kids run around Beagle Scout Acres, a large green space where kids can have a snack or a picnic, summer camp-style, on the shaded tables. The area will host a variety of activities throughout the day, including sing-a-longs around the campfire pit.

Camp Snoopy is included in regular Knott’s Berry Farm admission. For more information, go to www.Knotts.com.

15 Ways to Enjoy the Water in Myrtle Beach This Summer https://tinybeans.com/15-ways-to-enjoy-the-water-in-myrtle-beach-this-summer/ Thu, 06 Jun 2024 20:31:08 +0000 https://tinybeans.com/?p=2210872 From water parks to dolphin watching, parasailing to surfing, Myrtle Beach is full of family fun. This sunny South Carolina vacation destination is known for a large variety of outdoor activities and water sports. Whether you’re seeking a major adrenaline rush or a little R&R, there are countless ways to enjoy the gorgeous 60-mile shoreline.

Here are 15 of our favorite Myrtle Beach water activities to fit into your itinerary. Let’s dive in!

Thrill-seeking adventures

1. Zip along the ocean

The excitement of jet skiing + the breathtaking beauty of the ocean = a perfect combo. Myrtle Beach Watersports offers a variety of jet ski tours—and dolphin tours, too. Another cool way for families to experience the sea is on a Seakart (yep, picture a go-kart on the water). It combines the speed of a jet ski with the comfort and safety of a boat. Go on an hour-long adventure through Murrells Inlet with Seakart Adventure.

2. Head to new heights

Soar above the Grand Strand coastline (up to 500 feet in the air!) on a parasailing excursion with Express Watersports. Spot dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life as you take in a birds-eye view of the beach. Flights are ten to 12 minutes, the longest flight in the area. Better yet, you can share the memories with your friends and family by flying double or triple.

3. Do some deep-sea fishing

All aboard! Head out for a full or half-day offshore fishing adventure with the fam. Expert guides take your crew to the best spots and provide plenty of hands-on learning opportunities for people of all ages and experience levels. A few local favorites include Voyager Deep Sea Fishing, Captain Smiley Fishing Charters, and Salty Hooker Fishing Charters. Feeling super adventurous? Try a night shark fishing trip.

4. Ready, get set, shred!

From knee boarding to wake boarding, everyone will have a blast riding the waves at Shark Wake Park. This state-of-the-art wake park has something for riders of all skill levels. For anyone who really wants to hone their craft, sign up for a one-hour private lesson to master the basics or try some new tricks.

5. Hit the waves

Another great way to have fun in the sun is on a surfboard. Many companies in Myrtle Beach offer private and group lessons, as well as camps for kids—our favorites are Jack’s Surf Lesssons and Kokopelli Surf Camp. First-timers will love learning the ins and outs of surfing and developing confidence in the ocean.

Kid-friendly fun

6. Splish, splash, slide

Kids love to cool off on a hot day at a waterpark. Visit Myrtle Waves Water Park (South Carolina’s largest waterpark!) for the lazy river, wave pool, tubing, play areas, and super-fun slides of all sizes. Rent a cabana for the day for a shady snack break.

7. Get wowed at Ripley’s Aquarium

See the sea in a new, awe-inspiring way at Ripley’s Aquarium. Hand feed stingrays, watch penguins frolic, and meet sloths Cleo and Rico, the aquarium’s newest residents. The Dangerous Reef 750,000-gallon exhibit is packed with sharks, sawfish, a sea turtle, and over 14,000 fish–sure to delight both kiddos and their parents.

8. Try an “island” adventure

Massive floating, inflatable playground? Yes, please! Head to Obstacle Island at Shark Wake Park to climb hurdles, bounce around, and test your balance skills as you wobble over the water. Don’t worry, if (or shall we say when!) you fall into the water, it’s easy to get right back on the course and try again. Participants must be seven years old, 45” tall, and able to swim to partake!

9. Drop a line

Picture perfect view. Check. Ocean breezes. Check. Great catches. Check. Pier Fishing is a tried and true activity for families that prefer to stay on land. Better yet, Myrtle Beach’s five piers are close to many restaurants, live entertainment venues, arcades, and more. Catches are seasonal—but be on the lookout for Spanish Mackerel, King Mackerel, and Flounder.

10. Tour in tandem

Explore the inlet and saltwater marsh channels on a single or double sit-in kayak with Crazy Sister Fishing and Cruises. Paddle through pristine ecosystems–spotting diverse wildlife and sea creatures along the journey. Glide into secluded spots on gentle waves, taking in a unique perspective of Myrtle Beach.

Relaxed & scenic watersports

11. Spot dolphins

Is there anything more adorable than watching dolphins play in the ocean? (Okay, besides your kids?) Myrtle Beach offers plenty of ways to set sail on a scenic, relaxing dolphin tour with knowledgeable guides. At Blue Wave Adventures, choose from four unique dolphin watch cruises, including both private and group experiences. Families love the special experience of seeing these majestic mammals splash and dive up close.

12. See the sights on a paddleboard

Whether you’re a pro paddle boarder or a newbie, there are many stretches of Myrtle Beach coastline that are perfect for a paddleboard excursion. North Myrtle Beach is known for calmer waters, making it a good spot to get your sea legs. But be sure to check out the two state parks, Murrells Inlet, Cherry Grove, and the Waccamaw River.

13. Explore the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk

Head to the historic fishing village of Murrells Inlet and stroll along the marsh walk, a half-mile wooden boardwalk along a natural saltwater estuary. Delicious waterfront restaurants line the path, so grab a bite while enjoying the salt air breeze and golden sunsets.

14. Soak up the sun in a state park

Visitors love taking a break from the hustle and bustle at Huntington Beach State Park and Myrtle Beach State Park. Whether camping, hiking, birding, swimming, or doing water sports, there’s something for everyone. Beautiful trails and quiet shores are a memorable respite. Plus, there are plenty of playgrounds and picnic areas to enjoy.

15. Wind down the day

There’s nothing like a South Carolina sunset. Decompress from a busy day on a relaxing sunset cruise through the serene saltwater marsh estuary of Murrells Inlet. Don’t forget to snap gorgeous photos of the picturesque houses, waterways, and lush vegetation. It’s pure magic!

These Myrtle Beach water activities are a sure-fire way to get your kids to try something new and exciting in the water this summer (I think we’re all ready to give playing “Marco Polo” at the hotel pool a break).

Everything You Need to Know About Disneyland’s New Pixar Fest https://tinybeans.com/disneyland-pixar-fest/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 15:57:06 +0000 https://tinybeans.com/?p=2209204 Calling all lovers of Turning Red, Up, and Inside Out! Disneyland is putting its beloved Pixar friends front and center for the return of Pixar Fest, a celebration of the music, themes, and characters from its Pixar Animation Studios films. The Pixar-ification includes new food items, a reimagined fireworks display, a new parade, and a new immersive show that’ll have Disney toddlers freeze-dancing their wiggles away.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Pixar Fest, which runs now through Aug. 4 at Disneyland and California Adventure:

There’s a Reimagined Fireworks Show

Melissa Heckscher

If you can keep your tired Disney littles up until 9:30 p.m., it’s worth it. This totally upgraded reimagining of 2018’s “Together Forever” fireworks display includes projections, lasers, fireworks, pyrotechnics, and music—all set to familiar Pixar tunes. The magic happens all around you, with light projections spread across almost every visible surface up and down Main Street as well as splashed across Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Keep your eyes on the rooftops during the Coco scene and you might even see a few 10-foot-tall characters standing up there!

And, Disney has a few other new tricks up its sleeve, including a certain beloved hot air balloon that floats through the air amid the smoke…

Insider’s Tip: Want an easy exit? Watch the show in the middle of Main Street outside the Market House near the park entrance. There are so many cool light projections up and down Main Street that your littles will be sufficiently transfixed—and you’ll be happy for the easy out when the fireworks end.

The “Better Together” Parade Isn’t to Be Missed

Richard Harbaugh/Disneyland Resort

It starts with a cheerful team of rhythmic roller skaters (who manage to make eye contact or wave at every kid in the crowd!) and ends with an upbeat song you won’t get out of your head for the rest of the afternoon. The “Better Together” Pixar Pals Celebration Parade (a reworked version of 2018’s Pixar Play Parade) at California Adventure pays homage to iconic Pixar films such as Toy Story and Monsters, Inc. alongside newbies like Turning Red, Soul, Luca, and Inside Out. It’s short and sweet—a perfect midday break from the rides.

There’s an Immersive New Show for Kids Who Want to PLAY!

Melissa Heckscher

Need a place where your littles can get out some energy and NOT HAVE TO STAND IN ANY LINES? The new Pixar Pals Playtime Party is your spot! Part show, part dance lesson, part open playtime—guests of all ages can join in on the fun here as Fantasyland Theatre (in Disneyland Park) is transformed into a daytime fun zone. Learn some dance moves from Disney’s enthusiastic MCs; play an organized game of Red Light, Green Light; get your picture taken with Luca and Alberto from Luca or Wade and Amber from Elemental (it’s their first time appearing at Disneyland!); or, just enjoy the shaded break from the rides and watch some Pixar shorts on the big screen.

You’re Probably Going to Want Some of This New  Merch

Like it or not, it wouldn’t be Disney without a slew of new merch to match the event. So, naturally with Pixar Fest comes Pixar Fest gear and goods. Here are some of our favorite new items:

  • Pixar Fest crossbody bag – This non-gender-specific turquoise and orange crossbody bag is the perfect size for toting your wallet, phone, and Disney ticket on and off all those rides.
  • Alien Pizza Planet Popcorn Bucket – This new popcorn vessel is a bona fide toy! Straight from Toy Story, this Alien Pizza Planet truck has working lights and a little alien in the driver’s seat. There’s also an impressive replica guitar popcorn bucket ode to Coco; and a Doug bucket from the movie Up (but that one’s only available to Magic Key holders) that’s only  They’re all adorable (if a bit bulky—bring a bag to carry them in when your kid is done munching.
  • Themed medallions – If you’re a coin collector (or, at least, a collector of Disney gold medallions), you’ll want to get your hands on the new, limited-time Pixar-themed coins.
  • Custom Character Headbands – Yet another fun thing for your kids (or you) to collect, these cute character plushies slide onto specialized headbands to make for a fun new twist on Mickey ears. (Pssst: They’re already wildly popular at Hong Kong Disney!)

Come Hungry, Because All of the New Pixar-themed Food Items Look Amazing

David Nguyen/Disneyland Resort

Come on—you know this is the best part, right? As if you didn’t have enough choices of splurge-worthy eats, Disney chefs have been hard at work designing a new menu of Pixar-themed snacks, entrees, and treats for the park’s menu. Here are some of our faves (to learn where to find them in the parks, go to Disneyparks.disney.go.com):

  • Shake 2319 inspired by Monsters, Inc. – This vanilla, orange, guava, and pineapple shake is topped with shaved coconut, whipped topping, and an orange cone.
  • Fried Bologna Sandwich inspired by Up – Comfort food at its best, this sandwich is made of fried bologna, Monterey Jack cheese, mustard, and mayo on white bread. Served with house-made chips, cinnamon apples, and a pickle spear.
  • Inside Out Mac and Cheese – Match your mac to your mood! Choose from Joy’s “Yellow Comforting” mac and cheese with happy cheese puffs or Anger’s “Angry Red Hot” mac and cheese with spicy cheese crunch.
  • Pixar Fest Cake – Three gorgeous rainbow layers of sponge cake with cream cheese frosting. Your kid will want it for the rainbow.
  • Sea Monster Friends Parfait inspired by Luca – A four-layer parfait of graham cracker crumbs, mascarpone cheesecake, berry blue gelatin, and blue Chantilly, topped with a Luca chocolate medallion.

California Adventure has a new “Club”

Melissa Heckscher

When the sun goes down (or really a little bit before), Club Pixar will take over the Hollywood Backlot at Disney California Adventure featuring Dj-led music, live performances, free family games (like cornhole and magnetic fishing games), fun photo backdrops, a bar with specialty crafted drinks, and a “drive-in theater” where people can sit in the back seat of a 1950s-style Cadillac and watch animated shorts. It’s a nice place to spend a little time while you’re waiting to get on Guardians of the Galaxy just next door. Don’t be surprised if you see Mr. and Mrs. Incredible wandering the crowd as well!

Pixar Fest, included in regular Disney Parks admission, opened April 26 and runs through August 4.  For more information, go to Disneyland.disney.go.com.

Big parks can be expensive for you and exhausting for little kids, no matter how great their “toddler-friendly” lands may be. So why not try a theme park that’s just right for your little thrillseeker (and maybe even for your wallet, too)?

Diggerland USA - Berlin, NJ

Diggerland

Is your mini mesmerized by construction sites? Is the sandbox her happy place? This construction-themed adventure park lets kids drive, ride and operate tractors, mini dumpers, excavators, land rovers, and more. Note: While most rides require kids to be at least 42 inches tall to operate the machinery, kids as small as 36 inches can ride on a parent's lap. There is also a train ride and truck ride around the park that will give even younger tots a view of all the cool vehicles around the park.

If you've got swimmers (and your kids are at least 36 inches), the adjacent water park is included in admission and has a wading pool and construction-themed water play area that littles will love.

LEGOLAND - CA, NY, and FL

LEGOLAND

Sure, toddlers may be on the younger end of LEGOLAND's demographic, but we couldn’t resist including LEGO's famous thrill center only because it does such a good job of catering to little riders and because there are no big scary rides to make the tinier tots feel left out.

We have never met a toddler who doesn't love dinosaurs. The New Dino Land in LEGOLAND California is particularly fun for little ones with the DUPLO Little Dino Trail ride and meet and greets with dino-themed characters throughout the day.

Officially, the park bills itself as being geared to kids ages 2-12—but whether or not your toddler has even touched a LEGO (or DUPLO), they'll have a blast here. Besides a roller coaster or two that your tot will have to wait a few years to ride, there is a slew of other rides that either don't have a height requirement or that can be ridden with a lap-wielding adult. There are also shows, an assortment of playgrounds, and a sandbox where your kid can search for pretend fossils.

Don't miss the dedicated DUPLO play area, a land designed for kids under 5 that includes a small train ride and several play areas where kids can run around and get those wiggles out. And, try to book a room at the LEGOLAND Hotel, which has so many fun features (A secret disco elevator! A kids' buffet! Bunk beds!) that your kids may not even want to go to the actual theme park.

Perch on the wall with Humpty or sit on that tuffet, Little Miss Muffet-style! This fairy tale-themed amusement park has thrills for kids of all ages, from roller coasters and flume rides for the big kids to swan boats and teacups for the tiny tots. The nearly 70-year-old theme park has more than 30 rides geared to children ages 2 to 12—with many of the attractions suitable for even the littlest riders. Toddlers will love the Pharoah's Reign Splash Battle, which lets them shoot water cannons at passersby; as well as Cinderella's Pumpkin Coach Ride, which takes them on a ride around the park on Cinderella's famous carriage. There are also storybook characters roaming the park, so be sure to have your phone ready to snap a pic when your child says "cheese."

Idlewild - Pittsburgh, PA

Idlewild

Calling all Daniel Tiger fans! This old-fashioned theme park nestled into the mountains outside Pittsburgh has a real live "Neighborhood Trolley" that chugs past friendly neighbors and all of Mr. Rogers' favorite spots. Called the "Best Kids Theme Park" by Amusement Today, this 145-year-old park—which is surrounded by lush forests and greenery—is the oldest amusement park in Pennsylvania (the third oldest in the U.S.!) and has more than 35 rides and attractions, plus a sprawling water park.

Toddlers will love running into the pages (literally, you have to run through a giant book to enter the land) of Story Book Forest, which is filled with sets, characters, and real animals (!) from nursery rhymes and fairy tales. There's also an impressively huge playground that lets kids of all ages blow off some steam with ropes courses, giant slides, and other climbing features.

As for the rides, there are a plethora of toddler-sized thrills, including some that don't even let adults aboard! Kids can fly on little airplanes, drive small cars, and chug-chug on tiny motorcycles all by themselves. At the adjacent Soak Zone waterpark (included in admission) there are several toddler-friendly areas, including a splash pad area, a children's pool, and a lazy river.

Adventure City - Anaheim, CA

Located just a few miles from Disneyland, this little park packs a lot into its two acres! Parents will love that all of the rides offered here are appropriate for kids under 5—even the biggest coaster in the park, the Rewind Racers (it goes backward and forward) accepts kids as small as 39". There are tiny cars to drive, little planes to fly, and whirling balloons to ride. There's also a petting zoo and "Thomas the Tank Engine" play area where kids can take a break from the action to play with wooden train sets. And, with admission starting at $26.95, it's a perfect family outing that is just big enough to tire them out... but not so much that they'll melt down.

Santa’s Village - Jefferson, NH

Santa's Village

If your kids can't wait until December 25, why not celebrate the big day early at this Christmas-themed amusement park where Santa (clearly) spends his summers?  Inside the gates, you'll find all things yuletide, from painted igloos and snowflakes to elves and real live reindeer. Open May through December, the park has 23 rides—all of them designed to thrill riders under 13, but many suitable for toddlers, with cute names like the Chimney Drop, the Little Elf Flying School, and the Little Drummer Boy. Many of the rides, including the flying Santa's Sleigh, which takes riders on a monorail-led sleigh ride around the park, accommodate all ages.

And, don't worry about those New England summers dampening all the Christmas fun!  The adjacent Santa's Village water park is open in the summer and included with the regular admission ticket. Toddlers who aren't afraid of a little H2O will love the splash pad and wading pool, while older sibs will be zipping down the Joy Ride Slides, a network of colorful tube slides, over and over again.

Sesame Place

Whether your kids want to ride their first roller coaster or blast off into outer space in an Elmo-themed rocket ship, all the rides here are cartoonified with familiar faces and designed to be fun for all ages (even the roller coaster, Super Grover's Box Car Derby, is suitable for kids as small as 38 inches—the size of an average 3-year-old!). Of course, those iconic furry faces are everywhere—including in the stores—so expect your little Sesame sprout to be all about the merchandise.

Want to cool off? Both locations have a water park (San Diego's is bigger, though the PA location is opening a brand new water play area this summer!) that is included with your admission ticket, so you'll get two experiences for the price of one!

Dutch Wonderland - Lancaster, PA

Dutch Wonderland

With 21 of its more than 35 rides and attractions dedicated to kids 36-inches and under (and most of the others allowing small children to ride with an adult), this Pennsylvania Dutch Country amusement park is the perfect first theme park for kids who want to feel like they can do it all. Kids above 36 inches can try their first roller coaster if they dare—there are three of them! But thrills abound all over—including swing rides, a dizzying number of spinning rides, train and boat rides, and an animatronic dinosaur trail, throughout the 43-acre park. There are also a few water rides and a splash park, so bring your bathing suits!

Pssst: Make a weekend out of it and stay at the nearby Cartoon Network Hotel, a hotel that opened in 2020 and pays homage to all of CN's hit shows.

Enchanted Forest - Salem, OR

Enchanted Forest

Enchanted Forest may be one of the most authentic theme parks in the country. First of all, the  20-acre amusement park is actually hidden inside a real forest: The trails (which are bound by railings made from real tree branches!) snake through northwest Oregon's dense green forests, hiding the spattering of rides from view until you're right beside them. Secondly, with a fairytale theme that begins when you walk through the castle entrance and continues with storybook facades and familiar nursery rhyme characters throughout, your kids will feel like they've stepped into a real enchanted land.

Of the 10 rides hidden throughout the park, five of them take kids 36 inches and smaller. There are some big rides here that are too scary (and fast) for toddlers, including the Ice Mountain Bobsleds roller coaster, the Haunted House, and the Big Timber log ride (which is reportedly the largest of its kind in the Pacific Northwest), but it's not the rides that the littles will love; it's the scenery. The forested trails are perfect for running free, and the heavily themed fairytale sets will spark those little imaginations to run wild.

Another bonus: Admission is just $25, with rides costing additional tickets (tickets are $1 each). That means if you just want to go in and explore the forest trails—and maybe add a kiddie ride or two—that's enough! Included in admission are the various mazes and interactive elements that lead guests straight into the stories (for instance, kids can climb through a hole in a log that leads to Wonderland).  Want to know more? Check out Coaster Studio's Youtube video for a cool look inside the park.

Gilroy Gardens – Gilroy, CA

The annual Garlic Festival isn’t the only thing bringing tourists to Gilroy! The unique agriculturally-themed Gilroy Gardens amusement park lets kids climb aboard a giant artichoke for a teacup-style ride or hop on a caterpillar for a spinny trip around a giant apple core. Of the 18 garden-themed rides in the park, all but three are good for toddlers (though big sibs will love them!)

But it’s not all about the rides! The real reason to come to this 536-acre park is to visit its collection of bizarre “Circus Trees.” These trees, with intentionally bent and snarled roots and branches, are living masterpieces grown through a particular process that results in trees that are unique works of art (some of which are so big you can walk through them!).  The sprawling property also has six botanical gardens, some of which offer specialized tours, including a relaxed boat cruise through a Rainbow Garden and an on-a-track replica Model-T tour of a model of Historical Santa Clara Valley.

Hersheypark - Hershey, PA

Hersheypark

If a theme park devoted to candy isn't enough to get your child 100 percent on board, we don't know what is! This sprawling amusement park, located in the town where Hershey Bars are made (the whole town really smells like chocolate!), has a slew of rides for kids of all ages—with many devoted to even tiny riders (the rides are grouped into candy type, with "Hershey’s miniatures" being those that take kids under 36-inches; "Hershey’s Kisses" being those that take littles 36 to 42-inches; and "Reese's" being littles 42-48-inches). Kids will love whirling around in giant chocolates and bouncing up and down on candy bars. We're pretty sure you won't get through the day without eating some of the sweet stuff, too, as the must-do Chocolate Factory Tour includes a free sample at the end and plops you out right into a massive chocolate shop.

When you're done riding all the rides, the adjacent ZooAmerica houses a small but mighty collection of more than 200 animals, and entrance to the zoo is included with the price of Hersheypark admission. It's a quiet enough place that you can wheel your toddler around during naptime and have a good chance he'll catch some Zs.

There's also a waterpark—included with your admission ticket—with some toddler-friendly features like a splash pad and a shallow-water wading area.

Nickelodeon Universe - East Rutherford, NJ and Minneapolis, MN

Nickelodeon Universe

Give cold weather the cold shoulder and head to the mega-entertainment complex, American Dream, the Western Hemisphere's biggest amusement park, which is home to an indoor ski slope, a water park, a skating rink—and Nickelodeon's second "Universe" theme park (the first is at the Mall of America in Minnesota). The park's 27 rides (all indoor!) are based on the network's famous faces such as Paw Patrol, Spongebob, the Backyardigans, Diego, and more.

And while there are quite a few big coasters that might intimidate little visitors, tiny Nick Jr. fans will love hopping aboard smaller thrills like Blaze's Monster Truck Rally, Blues Skidoo, Boots Banana Swing, and Butterbeans Sweet Spin (all of which are suitable for toddlers) as well as romping around various playgrounds such as Paw Patrol's Adventure Bay and the Slime Zone.

Disney World's Magic Kingdom (FL) & Disneyland (CA)

Melissa Heckscher

Oh, Disney. We can’t do this list without you. Sure, you're a huge park with equally huge ticket prices, but we can't say no. Because let's face it: By age 2 most kids are sufficiently Disnified that seeing their beloved buds in person is, quite simply, worth the hassle and expense (especially if you're a Disney-loving parent as well). It helps that kids under 3 are free at all Disney parks.

Of all of The Mouse's properties, Disney World's Magic Kingdom (or Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, which shares many of the same rides) has been called the best for toddlers since it has so many of the iconic shows and rides that littles will love. Think Cinderella's Castle, It's a Small World, the Jungle Cruise, and the Mad Hatter's Teacups. And while there are some big rides that your small child won't want to (or can't) ride, the majority of the offerings are good for all ages.

DIsney's Animal Kingdom is also a good choice for smaller kids because even though there are a lot of big rides your toddler may not be ready for, there's still a zoo's worth of animals to see (and all the big rides have parent swap stations so you can take turns riding while a partner stays with your child).

Of course, bringing a toddler to any Disney park requires some bit of planning (pack lots of snacks... and pull-ups!) and flexibility (this mom blogger has some great tips)—as well as being at peace with the fact that your day may be cut short when your toddler needs a nap or teeters near tantrum-territory. In other words, don’t expect to make it to the fireworks, but be pleasantly surprised if you do.
